About Cape Town Winelands:The Cape Town Winelands is one of the major touris attractions and should be a highlight of your visit to Cape Town. This internationally know area is famous for producing wine for over 3 and a half centuries and ranks in the top ten in the world. The Cape Winelands is also reffered to as 'the Boland', which means uplands in Afrikaans. There are 6 regions that make up the Cape Town Winelands, Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Robertson and Wellington. The three main areas being Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. The Stellenbosch winelands are situated 40 minutes (50 km) from Cape Town Central. The town is one of the 2 main areas in the Cape Winelands in terms of the amount of wine produced and exported. The city is known by locals as the city of Oaks due to the large amount of Oak trees that were planted there by the founder. This particular area is a world renowned tourist attraction and is also home to Stellenbosch University. Franschhoek: This is another popular town for tourists and it is one of the oldest towns in Cape Town. Franschhoek has been rapidly developing since 1990 and is now one of the most sought after addresses in Cape Town. The word 'Franschoek' translates to 'French corner' and is well known for a large amount of some of the top restaurants in South Africa. Paarl: Paarl is the 3rd oldest town in the Cape area and is also the largest. This town is well known for its wine production and also for its historic attractions. This is one one of the places that President Nelson Mandela was held prisoner and there is a bronze statue in memory of the time he spent serving at the prison.
